Contemplating a Move: Aquanaut to Lange. Thoughts?

Hi All!

I’m currently weighing a significant shift in my collection and would appreciate some perspectives, especially from those of you who’ve spent time with both Patek and Lange.

A bit of context: I’ve been collecting since the mid-2000s, beginning with a Seamaster Professional 300m (GoldenEye-era influence, naturally). Over time, the collection grew to include a few Omegas, Panerai, an IWC Portuguese 5001 (sadly stolen), and more recently, several Rolex references including a Daytona, a Sky-Dweller? Datejust 36, and an OP 36 “Celebration” dial.

In 2019, I received my Aquanaut 5167/1A (on steel bracelet), after placing my name down early 2018, well before the hype. I paid retail. At that price, it made perfect sense, a lightweight, elegant, under-the-radar sports watch that aligned beautifully with what I was after, just a quiet watch. I’ve worn it on many summer trips and even swum with it. That experience brought a lovely, almost surreal sensation, swimming with such a watch, quietly enjoying what felt like the essence of what the Aquanaut was meant to be. But now, with secondary market values hovering around 3 times what I paid (55 -60 k euro?), I find myself reflecting on what that kind of money represents in horological terms.

The Aquanaut still gets wear, particularly in warmer months, but it no longer represents the discreet piece it once was. Instead, it’s become a very visible marker to the outside world. In certain cities (Milan, Paris, London, etc), it draws exactly the kind of attention I never intended when I first fell in love with the design. (Thin sports watch)
Wearing it can sometimes feel more like a liability than a joy. Maybe not a liability but it just signals a bit much.

On the other hand, I recently (last year) added an 1815 Annual Calendar in pink gold to the collection and it has completely changed the way I view watch ownership. I wear it confidently, even while traveling. It flies under the radar, yet it offers so much on the wrist. Lange has completely captivated me, not just from a design and movement perspective, but for how well it wear and how easy it is to wear. Also, no one except WIS know of Lange.

So now, I’m considering parting with the Aquanaut to fund either
• an 1815 Chronograph (particularly the boutique edition with the blue dial, though I occasionally consider the black as well), or
• a Datograph Up/Down, a serious step up, but potentially the endgame chronograph for me.

I’ve also got an eye on the Odysseus due to it being sports watch, but I’m in no rush. I might try to obtain one at retail later on, rather than paying inflated secondary prices now.

I understand this would be a shift toward a precious metal, more formal watch, but I’m comfortable with that. The rest of my collection—especially the Rolexes, can easily cover any sports or travel duty I need.

The key question for me is this:
I paid 18k or something for the Aquanaut, which felt like fair value. But seeing what some go for now, makes me question whether keeping a time-only steel sports watch at that valuation really makes sense, especially when I could be wearing a Datograph or boutique 1815 Chronograph instead.

I’m not concerned with resale or chasing hype, just with wearing watches I love and which make sense both emotionally and intellectually. Plus, the pusher feel on a Lange Chrono. Too good!

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s made a similar move, from Patek sports to Lange complications, or simply your broader reflections.

Many thanks in advance smile
