Lange & Sohne Datograph 1999 or 2012?

 By: amanico : November 10th, 2019-16:19
The 2012 version has a longer power reserve, a bigger case and a very different dial. But the Datograph from 1999 remains my favorite, still. A better balanced dial, less empty, purer. And 39 mm works very well for me, as well. What about you? Best, Nicol...

I prefer the original.

It just looks and feel better!

Original for me

 By: yming : November 10th, 2019-16:25
I like the II, IV, X on the original.. and the newer power reserve indicator breaks the dato triangle.. But the original is too TOP heavy..

4-0. Thanks, G.M. [nt]

 By: amanico : November 10th, 2019-16:27

Original looks better but 36hr PR is a problem for me...

 By: Clueless_Collector : November 10th, 2019-16:29
This is also the same for their Datograph Perpetual, which otherwise will be my choice to compete with the 5270/5970s. Also I believe you need a deployant for this Dato or it will not wear well. The 1815 WG I have is already quite heavy so I can imagine w...

L'originale, chiaro. [nt]

Personally I don’t think the original dial aged well. The romans being the main offender.

 By: Jay (Eire) : November 10th, 2019-17:38
That’s what pushed me to the Up/Down despite the larger size.

Agree with Jay... Roman numerals meh!

I like the smaller case. IMHO

I vote non-verbally:

Never ordinary, eh? Stunning.

Hands down the original for me.

 By: jp884 : November 10th, 2019-19:05
It still remains one of my all time favorite watches. That this time around will not leave my collection.

Thanks, jp884. 11-2. [nt]

 By: amanico : November 11th, 2019-00:14

i prefer the up/down

 By: sake : November 10th, 2019-19:18
vested interest lol.

None of them are really my favorite but if I have to choose I’ll go with the original

 By: ZSHSZ : November 10th, 2019-19:50
I like the size, the balance of the dial , but the cupped caseback makes it uncomfortable to wear as a daily watch at least on my wrist . I tried it on deployant as well as pin buckle and I find the pin buckle more comfortable.... So in short the original...

Original of course

No doubt

Thanks. 14-4. [nt]

 By: amanico : November 11th, 2019-00:16

6 months ago I would of said the original but now with the Lumen I find the power reserve and indicator very useful.

 By: russell996 : November 11th, 2019-01:18
So I actually vote new. (of course the original will always be the original and that always has importance)

definitely the original!

 By: Watcholic_id : November 11th, 2019-02:23
better proportion.

403 still remain

 By: serg70 : November 11th, 2019-02:50
my favorite chronograph! Well balanced dial and perfect size for my small wrist. 405 sits on the wrist not so perfect... WBR Serge

The original

 By: Brego : November 11th, 2019-04:31
The perfect size, the crowded yet extremely readable dial, it all works. Yes it’s a pity about the power reserve, but who would complain about having to wake up to winding this beauty every day 😀

Original for me [nt]

New for me!!!

 By: ik2000 : November 11th, 2019-05:58
I have tried on both. The original Dato was the first watch that changed my perception about everything related to watchmaking. It was/is a masterpiece and a classic. However... As an evolution rather than a revolution, I think Lange improved on the origi...

i agree! [nt]

How about the finishing?

 By: FlyingSnoopy : November 11th, 2019-06:50
how do the two compare? Cheers

Up/Down for me.

 By: DarrenKats : November 11th, 2019-06:58
From pictures and specs, I always preferred the original. After actually handling both and comparing side by side, I prefer the more modern dial and the better dimensions of the up/down.

up/down for me :)

 By: chronos-lorien : November 11th, 2019-09:06
I have quite a big wrist and the original Dt does not sit properly on it. Though, I like the original dial layout more. ...

39 for me. [nt]

 By: VMM : November 11th, 2019-09:24

The 2012 version, because I dislike eaten numbers on the second scale. Also i like the indices instead of t roman numbers.

 By: Bobbe : November 11th, 2019-09:31
But to get the real feel i have to see them. Just to get the proportions. 39 mm is fine to me, that is a great pro of the 1999 model.

very tough one...

 By: keks : November 11th, 2019-09:37
both are top cool pieces... when I have tried them I have liked the way the modern version sits on my wrist a marginally better. sits lower and less top heavy... pure aesthetics I favor the original... both are great however. Now if I had to choose and vo...

The newer one of course !!

 By: Mr.Gatsby : November 11th, 2019-10:41
Just because this post is gonna drive the price up for the Mark I and I want one 😂 jokes aside, I can’t find fault with the Mark II Datograph. They are both stunning in their own right. Original is favored because it is the one that started it all...and i...

There is no comparison. The original 1999 under Mr. Günter Blümlein.

 By: Grisar : November 11th, 2019-12:54
Mr. Blümlein was a true watch lover and understood how to make watches. He was a true business leader and not a press man. Unlike his successors... He just got everything right ... Lange 1, 1815, Datograph...

It's sad they dont make the 39mm anymore!

 By: Franevan : November 11th, 2019-14:28
Original for me, roman numerals and a smaller dial just compose the watch better imo plus I genuinely dislike the case enlarging trend going on in the industry

Another vote to the original!

Original

 By: nice2guy : November 12th, 2019-14:36
I have the original and prefer it. I forgot it has Roman numerals. Never thought about it. I like the balance of the dial more and size.

Up/Dn

 By: Jeff_M : November 13th, 2019-00:38
Of course the original is a classic but mainly for the movement. For me it was too small, I don’t like Roman numerals on a chrono, Lange is known for the gothic numerals, and the power reserve was pretty short. When the Up/Dn came out in 2012 I knew it wo...

Newer for me.

 By: TheWindingStem : November 13th, 2019-05:19
As much as I love the original but I always believe in buying the best and most technically advanced version of something and let it age with you. Plus to me, having a a power reserve indicator is very important as I find it the most useful complication i...

New for me please

 By: MNG : November 17th, 2019-06:12
I much prefer, and own, the new version. The larger size suits me better for my wrist but I also find the power reserve both handy and visually appealing whilst I find the original dial to look a little too cluttered with the Roman numeral’s crammed into ...

Original for me

 By: Langeholic : November 17th, 2019-18:38
Despite generally preferring larger case sizes, I much prefer the dato in 39mm

Original [nt]

the newer version for me...

 By: vksl : November 18th, 2019-20:13
I refer the larger case dial and longer power reserve. The addition of a power reserve indicator is also useful in a manual wound watch

Original for my sensibilities, for the design but also the size (diameter)

 By: Robert65 : November 22nd, 2019-02:17
Any watch over 40 (I believe) may have trouble looking dated over time. The sweet spot in size is 37-40 for any style watch in my opinion.

Original for me

 By: Dave G : November 22nd, 2019-06:56
I like both but partial to my original. Dave ...

Newer one for me.

Power reserve, and I don’t like Roman numerals
