Thank You Marcus for sharing....
how his interpretation of Beethoven's 9th.Symphony dictated the recoding length for the CD format. Also your comments about Karajan, I find interesting. I have read about Karajan's self promoting, his dictatorial and taciturn manner with his orchestra and his "manufactured " lush sound for his recordings. I am not sure where I read that he enjoyed his many Ferraris.
I will take your suggestion and have a listen to Harnoncourt's series. I have the complete CD series of Beethoven's Symphonies performed by the London Classical Players and conducted by Norrington. Interesting and controversial set because of the use of period instruments and Norrington's use of Beethoven's original exact metronome markings and hence the music is played fast.
I have fond memories of Salzburg. I attended two performances there ( music by Mozart ) , but I will have to search for my tickets which I kept as souvenirs to find out exactly where the performances took place . I visited the Mozarteum, Mozarts's birth place etc. Personally, Mozart is my all time favourite classical composer.
