Contrary to expectations, he was extremely well read. I knew two musicians who hung out with Lemmy at his pad across from the Rainbow, and both remarked on his vast library - mostly academic works on history and art.
One more personal story about Lemmy comes to mind: I saw the world premiere of the John Wayne Bobbitt biopic, screened at the Rainbow (really and truly, I'm not making this up!) Lemmy had a brief part; visit Youtube, search for 'John Wayne Bobbitt Lemmy', and I'm sure you'll find it. Well, Lemmy was there that night, and when that scene flashed on the screen, he got a rousing ovation from the scores of guys packed into the joint.
Moral of the story: if you live in LA long enough, you'll eventually get invited to a movie screening.
