Great question Ronald

I will try to explain, but I am not at all qualified to write detailed explanations on watch mechanisms; so any comments, additions and corrections by fellow Purists are most welcome.
Perhaps it is easier to start with the similarities between Freak X and the original Freak concept:
1- The escapement and the balance wheel are attached to a central plate that rotates on its own axis once per hour;
2- The same central wheel drives the plate carrying the hour indicator. There is a minor difference here since in original freak it is guided by teeth attached to the inner side of the caseband, while in Freak X it is guided by a static frame carrying the indices and the UN logo.
And, that seems to be it! The rest of the Freak X is a traditional automatic watch, under the dial you would find bridges, wheels, mainspring barrel(s), keyless works, etc. You wind and set set the watch using the crown in the usual fashion. The minute indicator is actually a HAND sculpted to look like the bridge of the Freak Vision watch.
The original Freak has no minute hand. The original Freak operates in entirely different way. The whole geartrain, bridges, wheels and all, is on the dial side, rotating around the dial once per hour and thus doubling as minute indicator. The entire backside under the caseback is occupied by a giant mainspring providing sufficient torque to power the watch for 7 days. There is no crown, you set the watch by turning the bezel and wind it by turning the caseback.
I hope this is helpful, I will try to find more elaborate accounts on the Freak and forward to you...

The new Freak X revealed

Hands-on review here: Curious to read UN fans' thoughts. Would you still call it a Freak? Source monochrome ...

If someone had tried to make a Freak knock-off...

...by modifying an ordinary watch movement, this is probably what he would come up with. I was saddened to see this coming from UN themselves

Have to agree

Nothing freakish anymore here. Just milking the cow.

Freak that is not freak anymore... sadly

The problem with the watch is the name. A "Freak" can never have a crown.

If we could go back in time, and this watch could have launched before the real Freak, it might have been a nice precursor of what was to come. But that would have reduced the impact of the real Freak, which was one of the most industry-shattering launche...

Thank you for the comment Michael

No doubt that Freak X required some serious engineering effort to realize, and is aesthetically interesting watch. I for one would have had no issue if the brand has presented this as a more accessible 'tribute' to the Freak while at the same time present...

I’m afraid I must respectfully disagree with your last point...

On its website, UN is very straightforward about what the Freak X is and isn’t. I think it’s being presented as an entrée into the Freak zone, if you will — while being clear that it is not a full-on Freak. I think that’s very fair. Looked at a bit differ...

Good for UN!

Rather than look at it for what it isn’t, I’m inclined to look at it for what it is. Viewed on its own, I think this is a great development, and makes an interesting technical approach and aesthetic available at a lower price point. I’ll be taking a close...

Good take on this piece, Moana43.

I'm coming around to the same view. M4

I actually like it but I need to see it in the metal

If I like it then I will get one

Interesting comments. I must say that I am still true to the original concept of the Freak because that was truly an original concept.

Interestingly, several weeks ago I was working with someone who was wearing a watch that had the outward appearance of a Freak but had a crown and was a clear knock off. Now I see a watch that looks similar to that one. I didn't inspect the watch when I s...

Let's hope that UN continues to add to that thrilling list Mitch

They seems to have given this SIHH a pass, but perhaps later in the year or next... Fingers crossed

Cool looking...

But a freak it ain’t... and should not be called what it is not.

Not a Freak, but . . .

. . . I'm liking it more and more. M4
