ipods are cheap. If someone started a subscription service and charged you $300 a year so you could always have all your music with you, you probably wouldn't even blink. So is it really that bad if you have to replace an iPod every year (or under more normal circumstances, every 2 or 3 years)? But instead because it is sold as a piece of "hardware" and not a service we tend to get bent out of shape when it breaks

(also despite the ubiquity of the iPod we should retain an appreciation for how bleeding edge the technology in these things, like that in cellphones, is -- and given that and the numbers they've sold, its somewhat surprising the whole thing holds together at all!)

I'm impressed that you have a good experience at the Soho store. In general I find the customer service in the Apple stores to be severely lacking. However, I have heard that they are staffed up enough in the two flagship Manhattan stores to make it somewhat better...
