lord knows I love my barbeque!
But, fair is fair...all cables are not alike.
quality of connectors
quality of the connection of those connectors (soldering, etc)
quality of the actual cable (litzed, pure drawn, individually isolated/insulated, etc)
quality of the metals/alloys used in the actual cable
etc etc etc
A cable is not always just a cable...just as gasoline is not (always) just gasoline, or a three hand watch is always JUST a three hand watch.
Now whether the $75 HDMI cable is worth the premium, that's up to the same decision calculus of whether a Dufour Simplicity or Voutilainen Observatoire, or PP 3970/5970 is worth what it is, vis a vis a Richard Lange, or VC perpetual chrono.
Hamilton's are looking better and better...
Seriously, all joking aside re: the original topic of this thread, I'm not sure the final verdict is in.
Having been a serious audiophile myself, pre-digital days (Threshold, Bryston, Audio Research, Counterpoint, Koetsu, JA Michel, Beveridge, SoundLabs, Live Wire red and green but also NAD integrated control amp, Yamaha NS-10M, Technics, et al) and who used to be able to tell the difference between, ceteris paribus, Live Wire and Monster Cable vs zip cord (or when a speaker manufacturer inverted the polarity of their connector posts, and hence phase, in the left speaker of their $40,000 speaker system) I can easily imagine that there were some differences in the decoder programming, transport, chassis isolation, component finishing or specifications, etc.
Isn't that the difference between a JLC base movement and the Dufour Simplicity?
or the original movement and the Voutilainen's? (Longines, et al)
Or the 2892 in a UN?
or...or...or...
This is very possibly a "gotcha" but I'm not completely sure yet, I don't know Lexicon well enough, nor the media that "exposed" them.
About the HDMI cable, though, there are differences between cables, just as there are for CoAx, speaker, and other connecting cables - isolation (crosstalk among other issues); max throughput and bandwidth; build quality like broken wires, connection integrity, etc.
