The Best Sushi in Los Angeles area behind this door (please DON'T spoil the secret) WARNING PORN

 By: ThomasM : March 1st, 2014-07:29
The Best always elicits passions, even flames, but we are PuristSPro and we don't shy away from controversy if the position is heartfelt. There are many famous sushi places in Los Angeles, quite a few with their own fan base for "best" - Jinpachi; Urosawa...

The best?

 By: DRMW : March 1st, 2014-10:44
I don't know if this the best in L.A., you are going to have to buy me dinner there so I can tell you if it is or isn't! ;) -MW

No problem...

After you take me to your nominees for best... I like to save the best for last. :p

Sasubune was good prior to moving. ED-209 took us to a omakase only place but I forgot what it was called, let me ask him. -MW

I think so...

 By: DRMW : March 3rd, 2014-00:01
I don't remember where it was but it was good. Let me ask him. -MW

Is it the best?

 By: ED209 : March 1st, 2014-14:17
Awesome sushi. When are you taking us there? :) Regards, ED-209 ...

Hmmm

 By: Spellbound : March 2nd, 2014-02:52
The extensive use of gold flakes does not make it the best! To be honest, the ingredients do not look that great (the uni for example), and the maki techniques look amateurish. I certainly hope LA can offer better. The Shirako looks terrible ! And served ...

I'm a purist, Dean...

 By: ThomasM : March 2nd, 2014-03:40
Hi, Dean, Again we butt heads (but in a most amicable way! :-) ) I have tried Kubei, three times, and I did like it; several hardcore Japanese friends hate it. Go figure, huh? (BTW I've tried both locations...) I agree about the gold flakes, not my taste ...

Great response

 By: Spellbound : March 2nd, 2014-04:16
Wonderful response. I did not mean to offend, and agree with much of your retort. However I did not recommend the steak restaurant BECAUSE it was Forbes "most expensive". I have been recommending it long before Forbes took notice, and I recommended it bec...

Aw, shucks...

 By: ThomasM : March 2nd, 2014-04:31
Thank you, Dean, I look forward to our first meeting when we will both have much to share. All clarifications well noted. There is a (in) famous Chinese dish made with chicken similar to shirako...both (can) have that buttery texture and richness, with ju...

Is Kubei (I thought it was Kuybey) where we met up for lunch in Ginza? Let me dig up pics on my external harddrive... -MW

Lol! Yes...

 By: ThomasM : March 2nd, 2014-18:51
Kuybey is "too kewl for skool" in new Chinese... Yes, the three of us had lunch there...

 By: DRMW : March 3rd, 2014-00:02

Are you both talking about...

 By: DRMW : March 2nd, 2014-10:13
Is the Kubei that you speak of in the Ginza area? I thought it was spelled Kuybey ( and not far from the Panerai Boutique IIRC) but no matter. If it's the same place than I've been there! I'm no sushi connoisseur but that place was delicious! The staff wa...

Epic time at Kyubei

 By: ED209 : March 2nd, 2014-13:45
Hi Dean, I've only been to Kyubei once (location in Ginza near AP and Panerai boutiques) and it was the best sushi I've ever had. I'm surprised that others didn't have a great experience as we did. I loved it and hope to go back soon. Regards, ED-209 ...

Yes Sir, that's the one

 By: Spellbound : March 2nd, 2014-16:59
Glad you liked it, If you were in Tokyo, chances are that you might also have tried another famous sushi restaurant, my cousin's family restaurant Fukuzushi in Roppongi. Portions are more Western size so extremely popular amongst expats and tourists. Warm...

Sushi Kanesaka at the Palace Hotel; some place the name of which

 By: ThomasM : March 2nd, 2014-19:14
I've forgotten, near a FLW building (my host was a Nagatani) with only 6 seats in the whole restaurant, all at the sushi bar - these are / were my most memorable sushi encounters, bar none. Sushi Kanezaka was open just a few weeks; the Palace had just reo...

Ahhh memories

 By: Spellbound : March 2nd, 2014-21:02
Thanks for bringing this one up. Not familiar with Kanesaka and I am sure it was epic, but the Palace Hotel back then was my local watering hole for business lunches way back when I was a money broker. Great steak sandwiches. Kanesaka reminds of this hidd...

Any recommendations for...

I enjoy shabu-shabu very much, any recommendations for Tokyo near Shidome/Ginza/Shinbashi? -MW

Absolutely...

 By: Spellbound : March 3rd, 2014-00:56
Not too far away from Shiodome/Ginza/Shinbashi, in the downtown neighborhood of Ningyocho is one of my absolute favourite Shabu-Shabu/Sukiyaki restaurants called Imahan . This place dates back to 1895 and also sell wagyu through their butcher. You will no...

Thanks for the recommendation. We did Rengetsu and this other place that a PuristS took us too but forgot the name. Will definitely look it up when I next visit Tokyo and will be seeking your advice! Have a great week Dean. -MW

Since ATM is personally idolized by none other than Joel Robuchon, i'm afraid I might get blacklisted by Mr. Robuchon, or worse, poisoned, in a fit of jealousy! But hey, what's life without a little danger, right? Ok, ATM, you're on - date on! Let's decid...

Looks delicious. Unfortunately too delicious! Uh oh. Careful. Non PuristSPro members can figure out which place this is. In c12 seconds of detective work, I figured it out from one clue. Goodness, that looks mouthwatering delicious.
