In my personal case, I have always been biased in favour of the so called "Explorer I" variants, though I understand that this title encompases several references you mention, including the 1016.
Well, your comment make me feel that the next of my three "guardless" Kings to be introduced here, will be the 1016!

About the crown
Don't be sad for your 6542's crown ....... in my opinion (for that matters now) I'm pretty sure that after '58 the crown is without the + This is my 6542 by the way. ;-)...

I always thought that the " Crown + " came for 6542 released BEFORE '58... The Charm of these Vintage Rolex lies here... So many uncertain things. Best, Nicolas
