Patek Philippe

Like you, I find "dress watches" super versatile.

In fact, I wear mine all the time except during summer (I alternate between my CdV, my LUC, my LF and this PP is now entering the rotation).

As for the size of the caliber, here's how I feel about it: the case back is curved (as well as the front crystal) whereas the caliber is flat (and, I believe, has to be so, because curving the plate, bridges, wheels & barrel would be a nightmare, if not simply impossible). So a caliber filling the whole case back, as in the "flat-case-back" ref. 5100, was obviously impossible. Furthermore, it's a two-hander caliber so it has no reason to be big, on the contrary. Lastly, I personally find the size of the caliber aesthetically ideal: one can feel that it has been made specifically for this model (and has never been used again) and isn't at all an afterthought, and the curved brushed part of the case back around the caliber is a delight to look at.

But, of course, I love this watch, so I may very well be biased and someone else might legitimately feel differently.

Best, Emmanuel

PS: and even though the caliber 25-21 REC of the ref. 5098 is less elaborate than the caliber 28-20/220 REC 10J PS IRM of the ref. 5100, from both an aesthetic and user perspective, I prefer the first one: I love the S-shaped minute-wheel bridge - aesthetic standpoint - and love to be able to see the winding mechanism in action (crown & ratchet wheels and click) and to have to wind the watch daily - user standpoint.
