Ignorance is bliss, I guess...
My sense is that most people who sell through the auction houses don't know any other way, or don't want to bother with the hassle of selling into the grey market. It's also possible that sellers are often families/descendants of the original owner - with no major attachment to the piece and no clue about its value.
