How great is this platinum gem?
Have you ever wondered what the inspiration was behind the angle decorations on the dials of the Patek Philippe Split Seconds Chronograph ref. 5950 (dedicated thread here)?
Well, this possibly unique 29 x 29 mm platinum square watch might be the answer.
Manufactured in 1914, it was sold only nine years later, in 1923.
Grainy off-white dial, painted Breguet numerals, blued pear hands with center seconds: I absolutely love it.

It’s beautiful, has a bit of a western vibe in my opinion.
Almost looks like Ralph Lauren could have used this for inspiration for some of their watch designs.

It is said to have remained the property of the same family for a long time,
so it remained mostly unknown. As shown above, though, it is mentioned in the book from the late 80's “I Signori del Tempo - 300 Fabulous Vintage Wristwatches of Our Century” by Giampiero Negretti and Franco Nencini. Best, Emmanuel
In addition to the dial decorations there are other exceedingly rare characteristics: the extraordinarily early date of manufacture (1914), the style of the case,
sweep seconds on a square watch and of course it being a square watch made in platinum. Great find and presentation!

It's really great in its simplicity. But this one is quite extraordinary. I would have a very hard time choosing between the two! Best, Emmanuel
This is truly a beautiful watch.
The leather strap is also a very complimentary colour. I hate to criticise this watch, but the strap's widths at the lugs are far too small with the bars showing in the distracting gaps. I think that is a shame. Thanks for showing this beauty. Clive
