I do not think there is such a thing like "marketing evil". Furthermore, I also know pretty well what I spend and I do it without pressure from outside.
I think that the price / value discussion happens around Patek Philippe due to the simple reason, than in many ways PP is the leading Brand. The charge the premium prices and others are pretty much pricing themselves below PP according to their position. Naturally, there are exceptions.
Let's put it in such a simple way: if the new 5227 is costing say 30k, others can price their corresponding watches just below this. I'm not speaking now about the independents. Do you agree with this?
I am paying voluntarily these top prices for watches I want to have. At the same time I expect that a top price means also Top Quality. That forms the value discussion around Patek.
This type of discussion is around PP; it's the role of the leader.

While the car is depreciates every year and after 5 years holds 30% of its initial value, 5270 will loose 10-20% maximum of its value. IMHO
I am happy to tell you that you are wrong!
Go and buy i.e. 5170J, open the parcel and sell the watch next day. My guess is that over 35% of the value is gone if you sell the watch to a shop and if you are lucky to find a private buyer, "just" some 30%. And Patek Philippe is holding its value well....
