Patek Philippe

And even a bigger question - why do people sell at auction houses?

I agree that buying a common watch doesn't make any sense, other than the convenience and fun of the occasion.

For truly rare pieces, which tend to be vintage, I get why people buy at auction.  I do it myself, as I don't have any alternatives as I am pretty much a hermit in the watch collecting world.

Why someone would sell their rare, vintage piece through an auction house is beyond me ... with seller premiums around 20%.  Take a standard 3970, typically bid up to around 80k or so because the buyer knows that the total cost will be around 100k or so.  Pretty much what one would expect on the open market.  But then the seller gets around 64k (80k - 20%).   Other than convenience, that's a pretty low amount to receive for your 3970.  Even a hermit like me can sell a 3970 to my local watch dealer for more than that.
