A wholly unscientific and mostly meaningless observation: of all the rock drummers I've asked (and it's been more than a few), to a man they all list Neil Peart as their main inspiration. And, no one ever mentions Charlie Watts. Whenever I suggest Charlie's one of the all-time greats, I'm met with rolled eyes and the ultimate insult, "What sticks do you use?"
On a serious note - pun intended! - I think there's a difference between the appreciation of an untrained ear and that of a musician. Amateurs might have a passion for music, but our criteria isn't necessarily the same. The theatrical aspects to drumming are, I suspect, of greater importance to us than to professionals.
