Panerai's strategy is that they want to target the paneresti who buy multiple watches. This is where watches differ from cars. its a lot easier to own 20 panerai than 20 porsches.
i think panerai's logic is sound where they think if we add a date to the 372, the person who bought the 372 will also buy the version with the date, or if we add a small seconds to the 372, the same guy will buy the 372, 372+date. 372+small seconds(422) etc. so panerai does tiny tweaks to supply the junkies - the gotta collect em all pokemon paneresti.
I find the strategy distasteful, but I understand it.
