I had a similar thought. Firstly, I was a little disappointed at this news. But second, I wondered that if only some of the 150 had undecorated movements, it could turn into a very rare anomaly piece.

Undecorated and unmarked movements found in limited edition PAM00318 Any thoughts? http://www.network54.com/Forum/353391/thread/1319322410/318+pictures+update-++Sorry+can%27t+respond+to+emails

.... because it is

a vintage movement and you have a tool watch and you have to pay extra for decoration ...... ah what this world is coming to Cheers D

Bigger margin. Nothing else.

 By: amanico : October 27th, 2011-02:09
Don't think Limited Edition, it is total non sense on such a watch, which is nothing else than a marketting product. It is the first time I see a cheap ETA movement not decorated on a Panerai watch. Bigger margin, bigger money: Monerai. They put a solid c...

hard to believe

 By: Bruno.M1 : October 31st, 2011-09:17
the difference between such an ugly unfinished one and a Panerai finished ETA is probably less than 100 euro (it's not done by hand but by machine(s) So if they would save 100 euro per watch, that would be 15K because they only made 150 of them and afaik ...

we say in Italy: Eyes don't see, heart doesn't hurt. Does the watch work? I don't much care what's inside some of the recent models. After all, we're getting to the point where, even people that shouldn't be able to afford it W A N T Limited Editions in t...

I am kinnda glad that the ruckus didn't over take the Purists..

Am I disappointed that this happened and is a "black eye" to the brand? Yes..but I can understand it at the price point...

I'm a little disappointed with this info

 By: AnthonyTsai : October 27th, 2011-09:36
Panerai should have decorated the movement IMO. There is no reason in my book why they shouldn't have even if the price point was low. Their branding just took a hit from this as now people will wonder if other solid caseback PAMs in the future will be un...

Well said, Anthony. [nt]

even some of the lesser brands have got faux machined finishing

 By: Hororgasm : October 27th, 2011-13:24
absolutely rubbish. whilst it is generally accepted that not many, if any, buys a PAM for its finishing on their generic outsourced movements or their newer inhouse offerings...it DOESNOT mean that the reverse is true, people would buy because it has got ...

A good objective view from Anthony. I too find it strange

 By: John HS : October 28th, 2011-20:44
that OP has done this. Already we hear so many 'stories" recently, this is not helping the brand. Now only wish , the rest is not like this. Sigh. Regards John

Disappointing revelation

 By: Stefan2 : October 27th, 2011-13:52
I find this very disappointing. I guess Panerai views its core fan/collector base as those interested primarily in the mystique and cool of Panerai and its history, more so than on horological depth. There is much truth to this, as many long-time collecto...

PAM 318 undecorated movement

 By: dreamer8 : October 27th, 2011-17:14
Am I correct in my understanding that these " bare " undecorated movements are ONLY peculiar to the 318 NYC boutique limited to 150 pieces ? These were SE's from early last year and other than these, all Eta/Unitas movements used by panerai are finished w...

I think it is shady and should not be in there.

 By: doubleup : October 28th, 2011-11:47
Maybe they will change it and these will be the "error cards" of the Pam world one day and worth $80K. Then again, maybe not...

Maybe, that is a scary thought!

 By: BluNotte : October 28th, 2011-19:16
I had my encounters with "error" trading cards before, and were they wild! Stephen

Major disappointment for sure. [nt]

Use to be a Pam fan but that was before I joined this forum.

what a SHAME.!

LESS for us and MORE $$$$$$$$$$ for Panerai !! Disappointing to see this Cheap Caliber in a few Thousand Dollar Watch.!

Btw anyone know if this undecorated movement is in all the PAM318's?

 By: AnthonyTsai : October 29th, 2011-12:02
Or is this just a one-time enigma? Any other reports besides this one? - AT

i have a slight change of heart....

 By: Hororgasm : October 29th, 2011-14:53
after some heated discussion with several more prominent and seasoned Panarei collectors...i just realized that the 318 was list priced below entry level PAMs, but we are benchmarking it against its current market traded price. neverthless, i really hope ...

I'm not sure that's correct information Horo...

 By: Jay (Eire) : November 3rd, 2011-08:38
...I believe the 318 was priced marginally lower than the PAM005 but marginally higher than base logo PAM 000. In any event, a couple of hundred bucks difference in price is no justification for anything. Panerai left a sour taste in a lot of mouths on th...

That bit of information came thru a local gathering when we had discussion on this matter, and I cannot recall the exact pricing. Thanks for pointing it out btw. Cheers, Horo

It was $4400 back in 2009

Hi Anthony

 By: dreamer8 : October 29th, 2011-18:23
More than one owner reported this undecorated movement in their PAM 318. The conclusion is it's in all the 150 NY PAM 318 's Cheers, dreamer

Ironic that it is the Brooklyn Bridge...

 By: iim7v7im7 : October 30th, 2011-10:10
Hi, The fact that the image is of the Brooklyn bridge is a bit ironic don't ya think? http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/27/nyregion/thecity/27brid.htm The big question for me is did they have the chutspah to use a Standard grade ETA-6497-1 (vs. an Elabore). ...

It seems history repeats itself once again !

 By: bimbeano : October 31st, 2011-01:54
They sold the bridge an extra 150 times . Filip

Great post! A fantastic irony...

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2011-08:54
A fantastic irony... Whenever one tries to buy the bridge; they almost always get surprised. And it's not a pleasant surprise at that.

I gave up on Panerai on 16-09-2009

 By: mpiz : October 30th, 2011-22:38
Sold off my PAM111 and PAM183 and I have never looked back! They're opening their boutique in Ion Orchard, Singapore either this yr or next...don't think I'll step in at ALL! To think they would do such a thing is unthinkable for a luxury brand...Good rid...

This is certainly disappointing

However, I can't help but wondering if OP really got the inspiration to do this given what the consumer, have been 'telling' them. While this may not be applicable to our members here, I tend to think the general customer of OP & the corresponding 'market...

 By: thtc : November 1st, 2011-14:20
That's exactly what I thought.... It seems in the PAM's world, nobody cares about movement. Anything rare worth something (This movement may be rare enough to be collectible someday)..... This logic may prevent Panerai from going up to next level.

Maybe I'm nuts but I really like this

 By: Bruno.M1 : October 31st, 2011-09:01
Do I accept such a mistake form Panerai ? NO, they should be ashamed But on the other hand, like doubleup said, this could be the 'error card'. And with only 150 of them around this is a rare watch to have a 'mistake' I'm not sure if Panerai was really aw...

even with every one of the 150

 By: Bruno.M1 : November 1st, 2011-10:06
they make about 50.000 watches per year One run with (150 pce) is rare, very rare 150 Angulus in the 203 and 150 butt ugly movements in the 318 LOL

it's a business...

Panerai is here to make money plain and simple. Have some Rolex models lost their "value" because they don't bevel edges anymore? You buy the brand name more than anything else...

Not true in a sense

 By: Nicko16 : November 2nd, 2011-06:10
Rolex has always shown what their in house movements look like and we all know they don't go through high levels of finishing. In the case of the 318 I don't think you could say its an error with the whole batch. Even though one could argue its got a soli...

 By: 1watch : November 7th, 2011-19:23
This is totally unacceptable and even more disappointing to know it happened on a 2 year old watch without a comment from the manufacture regarding corrective action. This is not a way to keep or build brand loyalty for a company that has plenty of enthus...
