Watches are not so different from the art world now, but the final figure is just huge.
Mr. Rexhepi had already been proclaimed THE young watchmaker when the Chronometre Contemporaine was released a few years ago. Now he has a massive auction result to back up the GPHG award and the gushing praise we've been providing on these forums.
This result is a rising tide, lifting up Mr. Rexhepi and younger independents of a similar calibre. For this particular piece, everyone in the industry got together to give it a collective push over the top. There was obviously some intention with the bidding, but most players in this game are on the same team.
For those with a keen eye, there are young independents coming on the scene every year who are offering very compelling watches, typically at fair prices to start. Today, it seems you have to rely on word of mouth and buy what you like, with your own eyes. If you wait for validating press, the subscription may be sold out. When it is up to the watchmaker to choose their clients, they should purposefully include some passionate new collectors with the usual established collectors.

And it seems that is how you are viewing the result. My other suggestion was did this set the standard in terms of the new generation taking over the old? So not a specific comment / observation re price but more so a changing of the guard.

Well to me it is quite strange that there should be a change of the guard as Dufour's watches are generally acknowledged to have the best Swiss finishing followed by possibly Kari so for me, to see Rexhep leap frogging them both in terms of auction result...

I would not at all trust this result and I am becoming
more and more suspect at these auction houses and how these results are derived at. I feel that there is a lot of market manipulation going on and when one sees a result like this . . . well, you be the judge.

Nobody is slighting the watchmaker here. Re the money laundering or simply avoidance of currency restrictions; these have been a subject of discussion as it relates to auction results for many years.

I think I’m OK with the disconnect in certain cases.
When something is really special, really rare, then perhaps it’s OK to have big big numbers. But those are limited circumstances, there are not so many truly special watches.
