Facts are…
1. It is undoubtedly a VERY beautiful watch (and I kick my *ss for not having ordered one on time just because I love it and nothing else). It’s not the first time that it happens, now the train has gone and I enjoy seeing this watch when I have the opportunity to see one in the metal that’s it
2. It is was limited to 25 pcs per metal RG and Pt and is currently not available anymore since a while
3. The demand is much higher than the offer since it is officially discontinued, so few pieces have been produced, and none had appeared for sale anywhere so far. So potential (very wealthy) buyers have no other option but to fiercely fight when one exceptionally appears for sale
4. Someone has put a bid at this very high price whoever it is and apart from Phillips nobody has a clue about who it is
5. These are the facts and all the rest is speculation
Talking about speculation, prices… I take the opportunity to remind to everybody that this thread is borderline with the terms of conduct as Jay was mentioning at the beginning of his post. And it seems that is how you are viewing the result. My other suggestion was did this set the standard in terms of the new generation taking over the old? So not a specific comment / observation re price but more so a changing of the guard.

Well to me it is quite strange that there should be a change of the guard as Dufour's watches are generally acknowledged to have the best Swiss finishing followed by possibly Kari so for me, to see Rexhep leap frogging them both in terms of auction result...

I would not at all trust this result and I am becoming
more and more suspect at these auction houses and how these results are derived at. I feel that there is a lot of market manipulation going on and when one sees a result like this . . . well, you be the judge.

You need to separate this from the watchmaker.
Nobody is slighting the watchmaker here. Re the money laundering or simply avoidance of currency restrictions; these have been a subject of discussion as it relates to auction results for many years.

I think I’m OK with the disconnect in certain cases.
When something is really special, really rare, then perhaps it’s OK to have big big numbers. But those are limited circumstances, there are not so many truly special watches.
