No Worries At All, We're Repairing Watches Hundred+ Years Old
Apr 07, 2022,12:20 PM
Mechanical items built by man can relatively easily be repaired. Hundred(s) of years old historic mechanical pieces, clocks, bird-chirping mechanicals.... are being refurbished to as-new condition today. In a sense, as time passes, the technology/ability to repair these items gets better! Besides, pretty much everything can 'easily' be recreated.
IMHO the real question is if independents can do such extraordinary craftsmanship, why aren't the Big Box Brands (and 'Big Box Independants') seeking to go one step further than an independent?
Even what some consider the best Big Box Brand cuts corners in hand decoration. Why? They go out of their way to design parts keeping in mind to purposefully reduce the hand-work. If i was seeking the very best in mechanical timepiece creation techniques, the last thing desired are compromises being made on purpose just to reduce costs, or worse still, eliminate the craftsperson's ability to truly showcase their talent. This is why Big Box (Independent) Brands should start showcasing the watchmakers who create these masterpieces.
That's why the best independents seek out the best watchmakers. They have talent that helps showcase the very best of horology. And when a Big Box Independent outsources work for 'piece unique' or other items, shouldn't they also showcase and name those who help create the piece?
Purposefully reducing the decoration quality and parts design to expedite production / lowering production costs is not something someone seeking the very best in horology would desire. Isn't there already an abundance of non-Swiss movements that adhere to being incredibly reliable, very accurate, etc. Yet decorations.... Grand Seiko, for example, is already on the same level as one Big Box Independent, so the world is indeed getting more interesting with each passing day.
