Very Amusing, I have a very similar problem...
I open the wine list before the menu when dining. My wife will ask what I am having and I will look up confused to say I have no idea... cannot tell if it is a Pinot Noir evening, Bordeaux and if Bordeax do I feel like an austere St Estephe or a more delicate Margaux.... ha ha - gald I married a woman with patience.
