Horological Meandering

Once I get to 100 I'll have every watch I ever wanted

WRONG!

I think I have owned several hundred but I am not sure (happily my collecting ability has exceeded my MS Access database skills).

My path falls in line with people like Stefan Ma, Graham, and others.

I started thinking watches were like tiny, less-expensive cars that I didn't have to insure or register every year. That still applies, by the way.

First there was a chronograph, then titanium watches because I liked the look and feel. I collected dozens of flight watches, chronos, divers, and so on.

Then I liked moonphase watches. I got about 50 before the moon set, so to speak. I've sold most.

Then I got into IWCs and collected a bunch of them - before they veered into the new DaVinci and lost the plot. I've sold most.

Somehow I got a Paul Gerber Twin Rotor and veered into independents, culminating in MIH and Ochs und Junior.

Rediscovered Seiko in the guise of Grand Seikos. I've had 20 or so, but am sitting at 8 now (I think).

Began to treasure "design-oriented watches", such as Silberstein and Ikepod. I have a couple of each of these, just for fun.

Pocket watches? Started with Grandpa's watch and have collected about 25 others. Mainly Seiko, some Omega, some US-made.

Clocks? They're just big watches to me. But I have 30-40, which is all I can afford to wind and replace batteries ... :-(

I think that I have too many, then I start to examine each one of them closely (prior to listing on Collector's Market; an accurate description is essential). Then I discover anew:

  • what a nice font this is on the dial
  • what graceful sweep of the hands this has
  • oh isn't the strap soft as butter but strong?
  • the clittery-clattery-rachet of winding the Stowa
  • the gentle whirl of winding the Grand Seiko
  • the rattle of the rotor on the 7750s
  • fighting the triangular crown on the Silberstein
  • cursing the ungraspable crown on the Genta Gefica
  • forgetting then rediscovering there's no crown on my Accutron 214 (then playing with the other half-dozen Accutrons)
  • hefting the weight of the gold Senator Panoramadatum Moon (help me, Dr. No)
