I'm with Jon as per his post above.
Having three Rolexes already (GMT II '95, DeepSea '09, Daytona TT '12), I am now looking at the Nautiluses, Royal Oaks, etc. Classic timepieces, but none can truly match the sturdiness of a Rolex.
I personally see nothing wrong with one watch for all occasions, and if one has the ability to have a few more others in the collection as well, then the rotation gets to be pretty enjoying. However, a variety of reasons may prohibit people from acquiring or keeping in the rotation more than one or two timepieces at any given time. For example, if I was back home, for safety reasons I would never keep in-house more than one watch (if one at all), all the remaining would be in the bank's safe deposit (and this is what I actually do now).
I am currently, just like yourself, looking for my next purchase and it needs to be an all-rounder. I dress with a suit every day for work, but the watch would be nice if it serves almost all purposes, so that I do not have to change every day, etc. Although now I live in a very safe area and country, I travel a bit and do not want to have few precious timepieces here and there in my apartment.
So it is not an easy choice. The Rolex can take a beat, it is widely serviceable and also it is relatively easy to pass on should you want to move on to something else later. With most other options it may not be exactly like that (generally speaking of course) - but they are such wonderful timepieces. The downside is that the Rolex is too popular, too common - this may in a way bother you, or it may not. You can only answer that.
You should buy the one that makes you feel good, the one that looks lovely on your wrist. Should all of the above do not satisfy this criterion, hold on and look again as there are plenty of choices out there. Do not rush, in my opinion it is best to hold on and buy the one you truly love instead of compromising a bit. You will be wearing this the whole day, every day. If you do not do extreme things, like diving, wind-surfing etc. most watches of this style and craftsmanship will be just fine, I believe.
