Protect your other possessions also. Look where you see police officers in case you need help or they need support by honest civilians.

Ones i was in Berlin, and it felt very safe to see the police walking in the city.

The robbers probably immediately go to a fence or broker who's waiting nearby. And the fence/broker is an expert.
It's also possible they had an accomplice nearby who knew watches better.
