I think we are similar in our approach.

I think the ideal would be 2! A very nice “beater” and horological grail. However, ideal doesn’t exist.
However, there are a number of good reasons to keep the number low: you get to spend more time with the watch you love most. Money are freed to go “higher”. There are fewer watches to worry about in terms of service, keeping at the bank ect. And if you just have a few keepers, they become more “part of you”.
What I do find, is that my taste sometimes changes. Right now I’m just in the mood for a simple rugged modern Rolex. Sometimes a whimsical and sophisticated FPJ, sometimes a warm, soft vintage like my Geophysic. Ect. I think it is a bit like a persons personality. We have different sides and this is reflected in our choice and values. Or is it rather what we want to project to the world or on to ourselves?. You would be the expert here as a psychiatrist ;-)
I currently have 25 pieces, not counting family heirlooms. That is way too many. Should I be concerned, doctor? lol.. I think my primary reason is that I am too bad at selling. The journey is part of this game. My collection also reflect the evolution in taste and experience with what works for me. I have kept the mistakes as well. However I think I could sell half and be happy, so this is what I should do first.
Thank you for raising a great theme.
