Perpetually trying to limit the natural expansion of the collection

Navigating between 3 and 6 pieces. I find it a shame to be letting a watch sit for 6 months by itself... and I do not fear letting one go if it does not get enough wrist time

Opportunity costs in watch collecting

 By: donizetti : October 14th, 2020-13:32
... I don't mean that I should have rather put the money in the retirement fund. What has been on my mind recently is the limited time I can wear each of my watches - which is my main source of enjoyment. More and more, when contemplating a purchase I thi...

I agree.

A few years ago I noticed that i was wearing 4-5 watches waaaay more than any of the others so I’ve sort of imposed a usability criteria on anything I’m considering.

Yes and no, Andreas.

 By: amanico : October 14th, 2020-13:38
Yes, because I can let several of my watches go in order to fund a pricey Grail. No, because I can also sell or trade several of my watches I don't wear anymore for some watches which are not necessarily unaffordable, but which which I will wear with a lo...

Yes...currently trying to consolidate...

And trying to reduce quantity for quality. Like you said I try to wear and rotate all my watch and I do but I can’t really wear Grail all the time so there’s dilemma. However, then new and better watches keep coming out and I added more, lol... I’m not go...

For me,

 By: Juliusotto : October 14th, 2020-14:35
every watch in my collection must meet one criteria, must be that kind of watch that can be kept as one and only watch,so anytime if I decided or if needed all can go except one,the problem will be witch one will stay ,but in this way I can wear all of the...

I get enjoyment out of just looking at them also.

I have in the past owned numerous watches there was no possibility of wearing, including (beautifully crafted) ladies' watches, pocket watches, movements that did not even have cases, etc. That was fine, but I eventually I got rid of them. Now, when I thi...

When I think of my watches, it's as if I am a shepherd with a flock of sheep

 By: cazalea : October 14th, 2020-17:10
I care for them, I enjoy them, I keep them safe from harm. I don't have to wear them to be happy having them in my flock. Yes, I have given this lots of thought ... Cazalea ...

That makes all the difference

If wearing them is not the core consideration.... love those pictures! Best Andreas

I agree with you....

 By: Musashi83 : October 14th, 2020-19:29
that is why I sold the watches that I wasn’t wearing enough. I’m 67 years old and I might buy a grail watch but I like wearing three watches that I really love.

Donizetti you have brought up a very interesting point here! I have had the same thought. I've also agree with everyone else here. All I know is that I'm trying to slow the (purchasing)

process but know I can't fully stop it, nor do I want to. I'm also 67 so potential time to wear them is fleeting. Not good at selling but try to, yet know I must be careful as some that have been sold had to be repurchased! I tend to let go of pieces that...

Good points dear Andreas .. I have been thinking about wrist time..

and watch choices recently. Currently I am narrowing down my purchases to watches that fit my wrist well. For me, it will be watches with diameters between 38 to 42 mm and preferably not thick. Best regards

I can understand well, Andreas

I have too many and It bothers me. What is a good number? Best Christian

That is the key question

 By: donizetti : October 15th, 2020-12:54
Not sure there is an easy answer - assuming your main enjoyment is in wearing, how much do you value diversity? If you don’t logic drives you to a “collection “ consisting of the one best (to you) watch you can afford and that’s not the answer for most of...

I think we are similar in our approach.

 By: ChristianDK : October 18th, 2020-02:19
I think the ideal would be 2! A very nice “beater” and horological grail. However, ideal doesn’t exist. However, there are a number of good reasons to keep the number low: you get to spend more time with the watch you love most. Money are freed to go “hig...

Good thought, to keep an overview ... my solution: overlook!

By: COUNT DE MONET : October 15th, 2020-09:35
I sometimes pick them all or many from the deposit box, take them home for a few days and simply look at them, and handle them only. That sight is also very comferting, to me.

Excellent approach

 By: donizetti : October 15th, 2020-12:55
Good way to enjoy your watches, Count!

Same issues for me

 By: rnaden : October 15th, 2020-23:17
And to me, the main thing is not about the watches, but what I wear. To me, if I don’t wear them, it essentially means I don’t like them as much as I think I did, and embarked on a process 3 years ago to reduce the collection drastically. My target was 5,...

I hear what you’re saying

 By: Jurry : October 16th, 2020-02:11
I sensed something similar and expansion of my collection has slowed down for that reason. I now own about 25 pieces and that’s enough.

I suppose constant evaluation is something innately built-in. I'm down to a couple of pieces that i want to let go..

 By: Echi : October 16th, 2020-06:25
Nothing fantastic by the way. Just pieces that don' fit the criteria anymore. And that criteria is JOY. There are pieces that just become dead to me over time. And those have to go. I'm just lazy to do sale postings is my main problem. There would also be...

Very Good Point - joy

Letting of a watch to someone who enjoys it more- we can work towards maximizing pleasure in the entire community! Best Andreas

Have you ever seen . . .

. . . Seven Waves Away ? "If only we didn't have so many people in this boat!" For some strange reason, this film comes to mind. ;-)

Agree 100%

For me, ownership alone is not enough to justify a purchase.
