Let's be honest: obtaining a watch, any watch at all, is simply a matter of money. Virtually all watch collectors are smart enough to understand that there will always be someone with more money. It's not a competition any of us can win. Therefore we enjoy the watches that give us pleasure within our means and share the pleasure of our fellow collectors as they enjoy the watches that give them pleasure.
Now, I do know some people who feel that watches can assist them in the, ummm, mating process, and they may acquire watches for different reasons from the collectors described in the preceding paragraph. It is true that there are potential mates out in the world who are closely observant of watches as indicators of ability and willingness to spend money. Those collectors and observers are engaged in a pastime, but it isn't watch collecting.
