I think it's a reasonable point, but most perspectives on this topic are quite reasonable. Simply put, some watches are pieces of art, and it's just hard to find them below a certain price.

Some people buy exclusivity or hand-made or bespoke at $50k (or above), and time-only watches easily make it into this category nowadays. Others just don't bother to justify the price of a luxury item, for as long as it's a fair market price at which they don't feel cheated. Others still don't have taste and enjoy showing off their money this way; while the latter is not my favorite approach to watches (or life), frankly I still don't have the right to disagree with how people use the money they were able to make.
Personally, I can "easily" buy a $10 or $20k watch, or (though not as easily) a $100k watch. Then I would also love a select few pieces in the millions (for instance, a Patek 6002G), but unfortunately math profs don't make the kind of money to buy a $1.3M watch. However, I'm *genuinely* happy for someone who can afford a 6002, and I do think they've made a wonderful choice! (I'm not factoring in that a 6002 is a very complicated watch; I don't think it was the key point here.)
But perhaps most importantly in my opinion, let's also keep this $50k figure in perspective. For some people (in fact, most of them) even spending $100 on luxury is ridiculously high; for others (art collectors, as one of many examples), $1 Million is ridiculously low. And I can't disagree with any of them ;-)
