I guess they are a sub-trend…
Omega did some DSOTM with minimal contrast years ago, as did some others. The low legibility black on black was a marketing trend about 15 years ago, too.
As watches are mutating from a useful tool to primarily a Veblenian good for many, I guess we will see more of that.
At the same time I have to admit I have one of the non-legible variety myself - a Raketa Big Zero Malevich, which in terms of legibility forms a total contrast to the regular Big Zero (possibly one of the most legible watches out there, as seen below) 😁
