Horological Meandering

ChetBaker, you raise an excellent point and I appreciate the thoughtful feedback.

You're right that the seller matters enormously, we've always said "buy the seller, not the watch" and that remains a core principle of WatchProSite. The trust and reputation built over 25 years of community interaction is something no algorithm can replace.

What we're building with the price tools is not meant to replace that judgment it's meant to complement it. Think of it as a decision support system. When a collector sees a watch they're interested in, they can now quickly check: What have these actually sold for? What's the current asking range? Is this reference actively traded or rarely seen? That context helps both buyers and sellers make informed decisions.

The real power comes from combining multiple data sources, our own marketplace history, auction house results, and the collective knowledge in forum discussions. No single data point tells the whole story, but together they give a much more complete picture than any one source alone.

As for dealers vs private sellers, our marketplace has always been community-driven. The price data is neutral it simply reflects what's happened in the market. A private seller benefits just as much from knowing the fair value of their watch as a buyer does from spotting an outlier.

We see this as giving our community better tools, not changing what makes WPS special. The human element  the relationships, the trust, the expertise shared in conversations that's irreplaceable.
