I realize that it is thicker. I suspect that the extra complications add to the thickness. I believe that a GO Senator Calendar is also 13,0 mm which is 1,8 mm thicker than the PRD. My Ball and my Sinn are both 15,0 mm, but are sports watches. My Stowa is 9.2 mm and is a dress watch. The GO Power Reserve Display is 11,2 mm, which is as you state more in line with a dress watch than the 13,0 mm of the JLC. What I cannot tell is how either watch sits on my wrist which can add or detract from a perception of size of thickness.

As has been noted, one is for fine adjustment of the rate, and the other for fine adjustment of the beat. The fine adjustment for the beat is not at all necessary (if you have ever adjusted beat error you'll know this) and is there as decoration only IMO....
