But another question: is the 38mm version too small? 


If you're committed to getting a GP Laureato, I personally would err on the side of slightly too big rather than slightly too small for a watch of this style.

Also, just a comment about pictures: I find it hard to weigh-in on watch size relative to wrist size when presented with close-up photos. 

Sometimes a photo from a bit farther away gives a very different impression and is more aligned with how it will be viewed on the wrist.
