… since it refers to a claim not made. Blancpain refers to the Fifty Fathoms being created in 1953, not launched to the public in 1953.
The author himself creates the windmill he then wants to fight heroically. And he plays skillfully with facts, words, interpretations and omissions to help his cause.
Here’s one example: by stating the first specimen of the FF had no unidirectional bezel the author wants to create further doubt. He conveniently leaves out that Blancpain in fact held the patent for exactly that bezel. Did Blancpain claim to have invented the unidirectional bezel in 1953? Certainly not. But they did invent it soon after, making the FF arguably the most advanced professional dive watch of the time.
With this article the author is trying to create a storm in a teacup. The accusatory tone, the passionate bias towards everything Rolex, a bit of hubris added… this is giving me an idea of the real motivation here.
And therefore, like the author suggested in a different context, this article needs to be taken with a (rather large) grain of salt.
