It was the end of the big boat cars, the beginning of the Japanese invasion of the car industry due to the Oil Embargo and gas lines of the 70s.
Detroit was in trouble and the K car would come out in '81.
The US was still mired in the Vietnam War and Civil Right issues were still dividing the country.
