Sure, behind the front axis like the Toyota GT 86 and also the Jaguar XJS, or in front of the rear axis.

So Porsche made the 914 with the motor in the middle, and when they make tests with the 914/6 (cylinders) they had to recongnize that the 911 has no chance on the circuit against this car. So after a small production from about 100 cars - i hope i remeber this well - they stoped the production. This was a political decision only. From this day on they only used the1,6 and 2,0 ltr four cylinders from Volkswagen. The name VW-Porsche was born. I had one in the eigthies, was fast but rusty. So i sold him to a lady, before the seats came through the bottom.

I asked a friend who raced this car how they got it to handle so well. I expected a comprehensive list of suspension and geometry changes. He said.... “Strap a block of lead under the front bonnet !”
Same thing with Corvair

The rear flat 6 in a unibody made the car (especially convertibles) tail-heavy and very flexy so they put 100lbs of dampening weights on it (25 in each corner, housed in a can with thick oil) Not my car 😕 My car 🙂 Cazalea ...
fantastic...
