Nope.

Aug 12, 2022,16:05 PM

Mid engine vs rear engine, and even if you count that out i think even the all new Alpine A110 is still bigger than the original 911 so a Cayman is for sure.

Have a look at these proportions: A 1981 Porsche 911 vs a 1988 Peugeot 205, the size difference already is astonishing. And the 2010 Clio looks like a whale.

Times have changed, times are changing, but times won’t change as ‘they’ say …. Meaning …. Forget the myth that in a couple of years every car will be electric, no chance 😁.

Is the Porsche Cayman the new 911?

 By: amanico : August 11th, 2022-20:48
Heresy some will say, and most probably rightly so. But if we compare the original 911 with the new ones, bigger, larger, more powerful, easier to drive, faster, and with the Cayman with its smaller proportions, closer to the original 911, then we can rai...

I hesitate

 By: Weems@8 : August 11th, 2022-20:54
For me the Cayman is difficult to place. Maybe it is a hidden treasure. The 911 is the best in it’s class, and i have always the feeling to save up more to skip a Cayman and buy a 911.

I totally understand.

 By: amanico : August 11th, 2022-21:18

Thank you, I.

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-06:25

Agreed!

 By: CGJ0 : August 12th, 2022-11:08

I'm pro Mid-Engine! Thus, the Cayman appeals to me!

 By: patrick_y : August 11th, 2022-21:45
I remember considering the Cayman R back in the day when it was launched back in 2011 in the Peridot green color. What a cool looking color! The car was expensive at the time (around $90,000 USD with a few options, just shy of $100,000 with taxes and regi...

The 911 is more comfortable than a Cayman...

 By: patrick_y : August 11th, 2022-23:53
911 advantages; more space, more comfort, that back seat space is a great place for putting things like luggage, more gentlemanly, and more grand touring oriented. The Boxster was perceived to be a less expensive starter Porsche. And the Cayman, being a B...

Yes! I think people forget the rear engine was designed for the practicality of having back seats rather than performance :)

 By: Fastwong : August 12th, 2022-00:03
Even the GT3 RSR went mid engine a few years ago, it's basically a cayman chassis under a 911 body, they still get the same rear weight bias for traction out of corners but the weight is more centered so lower moi with the same traction potential, better ...

I didn't know that the GT3 RSR was not a 911 derived chassis...

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-00:16
That's news to me! Overall, I wished Porsche would make the Cayman a 500 horsepower machine for the price of around $90K. That'd be a good deal! Hmm... I think that's what Chevrolet is doing nowadays. Might have to consider a Corvette. The latest Corvette...

:))))

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-13:49

Wow, I learned something!

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-04:41

And if you look at Porsche's most expensive vehicles...

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-05:56
Look at Porsche's most expensive vehicles... The 959, the Carrera GT, and the 918... ALL OF THEM are mid-engined! So, while the 911 is their flagship, even Porsche admits... The BEST PLATFORM IS MID-ENGINE! And soon that all won't matter, because soon eve...

Correction...

By: India Whiskey Charlie : August 12th, 2022-06:02
The 959 was an AWD 911 on steroids. Not mid-engine. Otherwise, I agree with your post 100%.

If the oil companies can't do it...

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-06:12
If the oil companies can't do it, I doubt Porsche can. But we can hope! Hydrogen is already a lost cause and a fool's mission.

Horses!

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-19:24
I go to Napa Wine Country for dinner sometimes. It's 100 km away from my home. To do that by horse would be painful!

Well, ecology... :))))

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-20:39

Besides, the horse eats more in food and upkeep than a car does in petrol and maintenance!

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-20:42
And how good are horses for the environment? They say cows excrete a lot of methane gas. I bet horses do too!

hyppocrysis... :)))

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-20:43

Did some internet searches...

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-20:45
Apparently cows produce 100 kg of methane per year per cow. A horse only produces 20 kg of methane gas per year! And supposedly, on a per km basis, horses pollute less than a typical car. But more than a typical electric car. I'm sticking to the electric ...

What I understood, too.

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-17:29

I wouldn't bet on it...

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-19:58
Porsche is a great company, and I have a lot of confidence in Porsche products... BUT... I wouldn't expect them to make a fuel that was cost effective and good for the environment... Keep in mind, oil companies have R&D teams to do that and those R&D team...

True! Never say never! It's possible!

 By: patrick_y : August 12th, 2022-20:40
I've got a Porsche dealership nearby, only 10 km away from my home. So I would be able to get the Porsche Petrol easily enough.

IMHO

 By: Gelato Monster : August 14th, 2022-00:30
Both will coexist. ICE will also become more efficient. Those NOC and Majors not only have R&D, they are also some of the largest company in the world with real cash in the balance sheet

I'm not sure I share your optimism for ICE...

 By: patrick_y : August 14th, 2022-03:52
As someone who has worked in the automotive industry, I'm not sure I share your optimism. Many major car companies; VW, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, and GM have announced that they're spending very little R&D on ICE vehicles and focusing their R&D budget ...

Oh my God. The grail RSR

 By: Gelato Monster : August 12th, 2022-08:13

What I thought, too. ;)

De rien mon ami!

Interesting point of mid engined cars

 By: Weems@8 : August 12th, 2022-16:43
While the 911 have the engine in the back, the car drives so good, i even think it can beat mid engined cars in a blink of an eye. Maybe a Ferrari 488 can beat a 911, both are worth to own.

;)

 By: amanico : August 11th, 2022-21:48

Hahaha! ;)

 By: amanico : August 11th, 2022-21:49

In many ways yes...

 By: g_schroder : August 11th, 2022-21:48
I think the beauty of the 718 Cayman/Boxster is that it's become more of a purist sports car at this point than the 911. It's mid-engined for better handling, 300ish lbs lighter, two inches narrower and 6 inches shorter, and seats only two in a low and sp...

I see, very well.

 By: amanico : August 12th, 2022-04:37

I disagree with most people on this topic...

 By: gregcarraram3 : August 11th, 2022-21:50
I think that it is an awesome vehicle. I have had a 911s, and prefer a Boxster. In fact I traded my 2013 Boxster S for a 2005 Boxster S, and am in heaven...I have posted pictures of it on this site...People forget that the 911 did not come along until the...

No

 By: penfriend : August 11th, 2022-22:02
The new 911 is purely a status symbol. The former 911 (up to 993) was a status symbol as well, showing your status of being a capable driver in handling the go-cart. The Cayman is neither, just a rip-off within their product stretch. Not a purists choice ...

How is the Cayman a rip-off within the Porsche product offering?

 By: g_schroder : August 11th, 2022-22:10
My thoughts are really focused more on comparing current models (new 911's and 718's) as it's difficult to compare older models of cars with the current offerings. Like watches, some people love a brand new watch while others love the nostalgia of somethi...

Because Nicos initial question

 By: penfriend : August 11th, 2022-22:21
shows the rip-off: is it the new 911? People compare them and I am sure Porsche likes this. But: this question denies the 718 an own positioning within their product architecture imo. Not talking about fact sheets, just image and imaging

Got it, thanks.

Different animal

 By: roundel : August 11th, 2022-22:50
While the GT4 is a stunning vehicle, for me the rear engine feels more fun than the mid engine. A 911 rotates and then squats out of a corner in a delightful way. For me, the Cayman feels less comfortable when rotating. But I have far less seat time in Ca...

IMHO, in the same way today's M3 is larger then past M5s making the M2 BMW's purists sports car, the 911 has gotten big, taking the place the 928 never did, and the Cayman is Porsche's purists sports car.

 By: Fastwong : August 11th, 2022-23:41
I think what makes a 911 a 911 for most people is having the engine in the back so I guess to those folks a Cayman will never be a 911.... despite the GT3RSR being mid engine..... but whatever. Still though, as far as the model line-up goes, today we have...

Don't know whether true or not and don't know which year of production.

 By: brauner : August 12th, 2022-00:34
But I have heard at Porsche that 911 and 718 have (had) more than 50% identical parts. Either way, I like my little 6 cyl. sports car (right) a lot. And I will keep it. Come what may come. ...

When I see someone driving a nice Cayman I think, “there’s a purist.” When I see someone driving a 911 I see someone who prioritizes other things than squeezing every bit of fun out of curves on their daily drive. But undoubtedly I envy both drivers.

 By: BigAppleBill : August 12th, 2022-03:10
I prefer a mid-engine, but I also like the extra creature comfort’s of the 911. The dilemma is that by the time you option-out a nice Cayman, you’re already solidly into 911 price ranges. I hope one day soon to have this dilemma to consider.

Oh thank you!!!

The air cooled Gen are perfection (964,993,930) in that order

 By: Gelato Monster : August 12th, 2022-08:11
I have been dreaming of GT3RS but I am not capable to exploit its limit. On top of that it keeps geeting bigger and bigger though with higher limit of performance. Perhaps IMHO 911R is the most gorgeous and sexy whereas GT4/GT4RS is the most exciting, fun...

Exactly

All post 993 weight and size is definitely fun for me

agree 997 is the cutest watercooled

That or an air cooled 964.

I will keep that in mind.

996 GT3. To the uninitiated, it may not be as pretty, but it is mechanically solid and doesn’t have the computer alphabet soup of the 997. I am also of the opinion that while the 993 is lovely, it is heavy and lacks the tossability of the 964 or torsion b...

 By: nacelle : August 12th, 2022-12:22
I've had a few Boxster's and a GT4 through the years but I see no reason to change it up at this time. The 997 Turbo S harkens back to the look of the air cooled cars and the manual 991.2 GT3 is simply a dream to drive. To me, the answer to your question ...

👍

Interesting question

 By: Arronax : August 12th, 2022-12:34
I've often thought about the cayman as the modern day nsx. A bit short on character but incredibly capable, reliable, with a restrained design and a 6 speed manual. I would put the evora400 in the same camp, plus the inevitable niggles that come will lotu...

 By: quattro98 : August 18th, 2022-16:50
For a pure sports car. The 911 offers a rear seat and AWD, both of which are nice in a car that offers both performance and potential for GT use.
