Independents

Great Topic

I agree that the fervor for in-house movements has reached almost absurd proportions. Just because a movement is constructed in-house doesn't make it better or more reliable. I think everyone who commented raised valid points about the constant pressure to be new and creative and show self-sufficiency and that doesn't always serve the ideal of improvement. Lots of the allure of in-house is created by marketing, certainly. Valid technical improvements should be the focus, as stated by watchmaker Jack Freedman.

But, there's no getting around the fact that some base movements are, well, viewed as more base than others. I admit that I balk when I find out that a watch costing over 5K has a $100 movement engine. I don't care that all these other components were reworked and refined, etc., etc. To me it's like taking a Ford chasis and calling in the Ferrari stylists to give it a makeover from their toolkit.
