If I were to start again, as much as I love all the watches in my small collection (and a few that I still wish for), I’d slim it down and simplify to stick to just the first 3 I ever purchased, which were the first to immediately capture my imagination and heart. Sometimes first impressions and first loves are the things to live and die by….
1. Diver: Rolex Sea-Dweller Red Text (50th anniversary). Because it’s the ultra version of the steel sports legend, the Submariner. Because of this guy taking off a wet suit with a white tux underneath to detonate a heroin-filled silo and electrocute a guy in a bathtub that he saw coming in the reflection of his betrayer-lover’s corneas.
2. Dress: JLC Reverso. Except I’d switch out my black/white Duoface for the 1931 (blood) Red Tribute. A rectugular Art Deco dress watch that was converted into a reversible sports watch so fancy British officers in India could ride horses and hit each other with polo mallets without breaking the crystal. You can’t make up a crazy story like that.
3. Chronograph: The Seiko 6139 gold dial (“Pogue”) on the Terminator-looking JDM bracelet. We all know the story. In 1969, the Japanese beat the Swiss to take to market the first automatic chronograph. It was then smuggled into space by Col. Pogue, who preferred it to his official Speedmaster. Balls to the wall color scheme. Unpretentious, funky, wild.
