Ararat cognac tasting
Apr 01, 2017,13:59 PM
Art,
At Baselworld 2017, Yerevan Brandy Co had a booth serving Ararat brandy or cognac tastings.
They are the only Armenian brandy legally allowed to call itself 'cognac' by the French themselves, having won a Grand Prix in 1900.
I tried the:
30-yr old Erebuni €630.
30-yr Reserve Dvin €150.
20-yr old Nairi €90.
10-yr old Akhtamar €35.
Good news!
My favourite was the Dvin a.k.a. The Sir Winston Churchill as it was dark, aged, smoky, raisins and hazelnuts; perfect with a cigar and sipped alone.
Almost affordable.
The Erebuni had too many notes (more than 30 blends) to be relaxing: florals honeysuckle and heather, dried fruits (raisin, sultana, apricot), citrus peel, caramel, etc. Spent more time figuring out the complexity rather than enjoying it. Pricey too.
A cheap compromise is the Nairi that is lighter than the Dvin and less complex than the Erebuni. Good for sharing and relaxing to drink.
