Pear 'cider' and Perry

Thanks for the detailing, Andy. Very interesting history, both ancient and recent. It looks like the description 'Pear Cider' emerged 20 years ago and has led to a resurgence of interest in the traditional Perry drink, perhaps because the idea of an alcoholic fruit based apple cider was already well known and new drinkers could immediately understand what they were getting.

From a regional perspective locally these drinks are marketed largely as apple cider or pear cider. But then of course we get into issues of whether they are fermented in traditional ways and if fruit concentrates versus fresh fruit juice is used. Perhaps the true original Perry is more tightly controlled in this respect. The other issue may be that Perry pears are not available in all countries that produce a fermented product from their local pears.

I must say that the St Ronan's 'Pear Cider' (as they are marketing it) was a wonderful taste sensation. I need to look for the traditional Perry now.

Regards,

Andrew
