I know some big makes like Magners also don't use the word perry but do use pear on the label. Then like you say people will immediately know what it is which is a good thing as it spreads the word about. Just don't call it a pear cider at a festival...LOL.
As you also say the process of manufacturer must vary....a traditional cider or perry is just fresh pressed juice fermented like a wine, hence they vary from year to year. But I do some times wonder how Strongbow can make enough cider to fill almost every pub in the UK if it is made in this way..!!
There is definitely a big increase in cider and perry which I like smile
