Which is probably why I own an Explorer II 16570, have considered both a 1016 and a 114270 several times, but ended up with the 214270 as I preferred the 39mm size, new bracelet and all lumed indexes (I bought a post 2016 version).

I have been following your posts for a very long time, starting on Timezone, I think, and remember this article.

You also make a very good point about Rolex' current "managed scarcity", and it does remind me of the situation at the beginning of the years 2000. It was extremely difficult back then to find SS Sports models (any SS model) at an AD, for the same reason. Rolex had been cutting back production across the Sports models line. I remember when I got my first Explorer II in 2002, I got it second hand but almost new from a guy who really wanted a 16600, but couldn't find any. He saw the Explorer II in a shop, which was a rare occurrence, so bought it anyway by default, knowing he could always sell it without much loss if he ever came across a 16600. A few months later he did finally find his 16600, and that's how I got the 16570. It was not before 2004-2005 that SS Sports models were commonly seen in shops, except of course for the Daytona, for which they had continued to limit production.

I too am rather peeved by Rolex tactics, but luckily I live in HK where I can find about anything at grey dealers.

I totally agree with you. The only thing missing from perfection is solid bracelet links. They got the solid end links done right. I always liked this reference. Thanks for mentioning it!

Thanks guys. [nt]

Jocke (formerly called Tony) , Thanks for the long term review. Back in 2001, there was no Rolex forum on ThePuristS website and I don't read Swedish. I liked the old Explorer I but by the nature of its original target owners and low cost, most examples w...

In fact I have give up Rolex today because I don't want to beg a company to buy their products. At the moment Rolex have cut the SS production to make them more rare. So now I focus on more small independent and german brands.
