Rolex

Thanks!

Appreciate the warm welcome, everyone!

The going consensus here is spot on re aftermarket pricing. I've had reasonably good luck sourcing Rolex from my ADs at MSRP, and have a few in the collection - BLNR Batman and recently a 114060 no date SubC both brand new from AD as market rate. Feel very fortunate regarding those two.

My first Rolex was a ~2007 16710 Coke new from AD which I sold in 2013, in hindsight, a bad move despite a decent profit margin. I just love that watch and wish I had it back in the collection, and re-acquisition costs are silly.

I was always fascinated by timepieces as a child. My grandfather had a number of mechanical pocket watches with which he'd let me tinker. I think what sealed the deal is when my Uncle gave me an original Vostok Russian Military watch - handwound, 24 hr dial. I didn't really understand the significance of it then, but it's still in my collection many years later, as is my Grandfather's 1958 Bulova 4 hander with outer-track date complication, given to me when he passed. Easily the most valuable watch in my collection.

Difficult to summarize the rest, but here are some of the non-Rolex highlights
  • Omega 9300 Chrono PO- first gen matte ceramic bezel insert
  • Omega Seamaster 300 chrono - blue ceramic bezel/dial
  • Omega Speedmaster 57 non-broadarrow
  • Panerai 233 GMT / 692 BMG-TECH / 593 8-Days
  • Zenith Stratos Flyback Chrono reissue
  • A few Perrelets, and other "affordables" in the mid-tier and microbrand categories - Frederique Constant, Hamilton, Ball, Oris
I really like chunky, purpose-built tool watches, a la Sinn U1, and have recently been into bronze/brass divers and messing with patina - Christopher Ward example below

A little more here in my Horological Meanderings intro smile

Lastly, I do like tend toward non-standard brands/models that are aesthetically different - far below is my Romain Jerome Titanic DNA. While not a pretty or good looking watch IMHO, the simple fact that it contains pieces of the Titanic are undeniable cool to me

Enjoy!
