My sub is. 1983 16800...
...I know it is ‘transitional,’ although I bought it new.
Mine does not have the metal surrounding the hour markers. The dial is matte. Sapphire crystal, 1,000 feet WR.
I had always read that ‘transitional’ referred only to subs with the matte dial and no surrounds.
Finally acquired the Rolex Submariner 168000 ...the apparent rare production piece . Hope it’s a good investment :)

As per data and findings this is a transitional series and was only produced for 9 months hence limited pieces were produced
The steel grade was also upgraded to 304L and the dial is shiny gloss dial and the case still had holes .

Try to enjoy the watch a lot .
Dont see it as a investment , it will spoil the fun of a nice watch . If its worth more after a while its a bonus , if not then at least you enjoyed it imho
