I agree that the overall balance is indeed different - I think it has to do with the case construction that is somehow slimmer too
so it is not really about the 1mm but as you suggest a number of improvements (including the movement of course).

Rolex probably has a lot of data and probably since its launch in 2008 the day-date II didn't fly as much as they wanted. I have heard that the reason for the changes are also driven by making it more of a unisex model vs. the day-date II that is less wearable.

I would say that the biggest difference is in the platinum model: the day-date II platinum was really heavy and a bit chunky but the new 40mm is more wearable. The new dials are very nice too.

This said I love the day-date II with the ruby/diamond combination and I love to buy watches that have something special or are not as widely available. Very subjective indeed and I still that a few rolex owners still love the day-date II and wouldn't change it for the 40mm. Who knows? may be in the future it will turn out to be a good "investment" smile
