Jeff: agreed! but...
Hello Jeff,
I agree that the overall balance is indeed different - I think it has to do with the case construction that is somehow slimmer too
so it is not really about the 1mm but as you suggest a number of improvements (including the movement of course).
Rolex probably has a lot of data and probably since its launch in 2008 the day-date II didn't fly as much as they wanted. I have heard that the reason for the changes are also driven by making it more of a unisex model vs. the day-date II that is less wearable.
I would say that the biggest difference is in the platinum model: the day-date II platinum was really heavy and a bit chunky but the new 40mm is more wearable. The new dials are very nice too.
This said I love the day-date II with the ruby/diamond combination and I love to buy watches that have something special or are not as widely available. Very subjective indeed and I still that a few rolex owners still love the day-date II and wouldn't change it for the 40mm. Who knows? may be in the future it will turn out to be a good "investment"
Congrats but...

As you say the one mm difference is almost undetachable, but it's the balance of the design overall that truly makes the difference. Also, the new movement and the new bracelets construction all add up a much more attractive product, but these are my obse...

That's a heck of a watch you have there! Absolutely stunning. I agree that it's not the most discrete watch, but, sometimes, it's fun to cast discretion aside and opt for a bit of tasteful opulence. All good fun, no? Regards
