5980....some thoughts
Aug 07, 2018,05:37 AM
1) I would think that the 1998/99 transition away from Tritium can be seen in any of the references. I would be very surprised if it was just Subs, GMTs and Explorers. To be fair, I was introducing the "Swiss" only issue as an effect on these 4 watches, but I would be guessing it can be found on other references too. Genuinely, I have not looked but feel quite confident it will be there to varying degrees.
2) When is the "Swiss" only effect most profound? This would just be my own feeling, but I would guess that it is a question of relative rarity combined with reference popularity. The GMTs and Subs along with the Daytonas have always been the core interest for most vintage collectors. I would guess that will continue to be the same
3) The 1% of the 1% idea? Naturally this appeals, but so far I have not really found a differentiator. Also, the sample size goes down so much in some circumstances to make it hard to judge properly. I think that its possible but unlikely.
Thanks for the thoughts, Flip.....it was an interesting piece of research to do.
I just checked to see if it was there on the Daytona....its not there as far as i can see. With the pre-99 watches, it had t Swiss Made t on the dial. This changed to simply Swiss Made on transition. This needs more research, but it doesn't look like the factor is there on Daytonas
