Rolex 5513 Bezel & Insert Advice Please

Mar 18, 2021,04:47 AM

Hi Everybody!

I am seeking some adivce please! I have a 5513 submariner year circa 1968. Unfortuntley I sent the watch to a highly incompetent watchmaker for a service. Long story but it was returned to me with a badly damaged bezel and insert and I am totally devastated. I have been looking for a replacment for the a whle now and I have stumbled across someone who has the below bezel and insert available. He claims it is from a 1680 from circa 1970 and it has the fat font with the tritum insert. He is certain it will fit my watch and the font matches or comes close to the font used in that era i.e 1970. Unfortunatley I am not equipped with the knowledge or skillset to decide of this is a good buy or not. It is very expensive around €1400 (insert and bezel) and understandably I dont want to make a mistake. I would really appreciate your comments please and if you think the below insert looks genuine and is in fact from the 1970s era and the font looks genuine etc. Thanks Darren

My apologies, sir! Good luck finding a replacement.

I don't parlticularly like the scratch on the insert (triangle) nor the font! Can't say anything more, sorry!

Yes scratch is superficial and comes with age

Thanks Mary Ann, yes scratch is superficial and comes with age unfortunatley, what do you not like about the font?

Not sure, are the numbers somewhat seriffed?

Mary ann please see the mess that I was left to contend with, he could not get the inster back in to the bezel and from what i can see he tried to file it or pear it down, he also did a job on the bezel itself it is bent out of shape and can no longer hou...

Looks like some MK3 insert with quite some serif font! Not so different from the one you'd like to buy!

Do not want to put the finger on the sore spot but, what happened with that poor bezel?

It is always a little hard to tell because the photos light. It does look like it may be cracked at thriangle top.

To recap. The bezel fits and operates correctly. The insert has been damaged and will no longer remain in the insert.

If the bezel is damaged you have two issues. I might suggest you locate a cheaper insert or service insert that is a more reasonable price to insure all is functioning correctly. You can then move on to locating the period correct insert with less trepida...
