24 vs 60

Leica M246 Monochrom, 24mp


Hasselblad X1D2, 60mp, BW conversion


With the X at 60mp, I’m thinking I can ditch the M246 already. BW conversion is quite decent if I benchmark tonality vs a BW camera like the M246.

Also interesting to note how a pure bw camera at 24mp outputs at the same level as a 60mp bw conversion. Not to say though that the X is the better camera. I love the output and the controls but the X1D2 focusing is slow and nothing beats the process of photographing with a rangefinder. But with how my eyes are these days and with my photography having slowed down, the X is good enough. Upgrading to the latest X with a 100mp might be too much for me in all aspects. 60mp is probably already hitting the limits of my old macbook pro. Upgrade to a 100mp and that might mean buying a new laptop as well not to mention additional storage and maybe faster cards!

I think there are really two things you highlight: input - the process that makes you happiest, output - how good the images look after processing. With a rangefinder it takes a while to unlearn the quicker process of autofocus and to remind yourself that... 

Agree with you 100%.. in my eyes, it takes a 60mp mf sensor to get close to a 24mp mono cam..

As to the actual tones produced, i’m sure it’s not 1:1 as the M246 outputs more than 16k shades of bw which means deeper blacks, for example. But then at 60mp conversion to bw, software like LightRoom has a lot to work with to make it a close fight. Perso...

3200 is fine

6400 is fine. It’s only when you go to 12800, or you need to crop images severely that you need denoise when above 3200. As I said when the image is cropped to approx 18MP and is at 3200 ISO or higher do you need denoise. I might add some of the B&W image... 

An interesting comparison, albeit full frame vs. medium format ...

I’m with you on 100mp being overkill! I have big prints from the m246 and use that as basis for determining that i’m ok with my current cameras. At some point, we have to say basta! Lovin’ that last bridge pic. Where were you standing to take that?
