You can't go wrong with either. The 3940 is more clean and the "right" reference as most people here agree on. I went for the ugly duckling with the squeezed numbers and I certainly think it has its place. It is more of an allround watch where the 3940 appears more formal. In my opinion it goes better with casual clothes (which I wear most of the time, when off work), but wearing a suit and the 5140 still does the job as good as the 3940. I have a small wrist too, but a thin 37,2 mm does not feel big at all. The often criticized squeezed numbers... I just find it charming and give it a face of its own.

IMHO the 3940 is a Patek classic, plus pricing is becoming reasonable too. Of course best bet is finding one complete with box, books, original certificate (not Archives) and with fresh service.
