Separate from the watch, everything else about this launch really says a lot about where PP is at - this interview, the ads, the price, the hype, the approach, everything
The interview made it clear that Stern's ego knows no bounds. It's bigger than the customers, bigger than designers / contributors like Genta that got him to where he is today (What would PP have been through the hype bubble if the Nautilus didn't exist?), and bigger than the PP organization. The cubitus sets a new blank slate created by Stern himself. Cringe.
The video ad they created for the website for the Cubitus is 100% status and signaling, no horology. It's not even tied to PP history or brand legacy, it is all new and could have been made for a new watch from any brand. Videos like this are so telling, they show exactly who they think the target customer is. Make of it what you will, it was 100% awful imho, but clearly they're targeting a small set of young wealthy and privileged for the cubitus where value is not a factor in pricing but newness and signaling is.
I think after reading this interview and watching the ad, I get it now. I get why the cubitus is so big - bigger signals better, it can project status further. The shape is more recognizable, different, easier for people to see from a distance. At the same time, it still looks like a Nautilus, big bigger and meaner, so now even Nautilus owners can be made to feel less than, and want to upgrade to the new thing. It really is an attempt to kick the Nautilus to the curb a bit. It's the new thing that's harder to get, more rare, and more expensive than the 5711 but appeals to the exact same group.
I'm sure this really hits home with a certain demo, but not me, all of this has been a huge turnoff from the whole PP brand.
